Expiration & Storage Tips
When does shiraz red wine expire?
A good rule of thumb to remember is that an unopened bottle of Shiraz can last for 1-2 years, or even more, if stored correctly. The length of time that an unopened bottle will retain its quality is highly dependent on the wine’s vintage, condition of storage, and the quality of the wine itself. So, ideally, it's best to follow the winemaker's suggested drink-by date on the label, if available. On the other hand, once opened, the wine stays fresh for up to 3-5 days if re-corked and refrigerated immediately.
How do you tell if shiraz red wine is bad?
To tell if your Shiraz has gone bad, give it a good look and a quick sniff. If the color appears to be a brownish hue, this is a sign it might be past its prime. Another signal is when the wine has a strong, sharp smell similar to vinegar, nail polish remover, or wet cardboard. If any of these signs are apparent, it's likely the wine has oxidized and is no longer good to drink.
Tips for storing shiraz red wine to extend shelf life
• Store wine bottles on their side. This keeps the cork moist, which is important for preventing air from entering the bottle.
• Keep the wine in a cool, dark place. Excessive heat and sunlight can deteriorate the quality of the wine.
• Opened bottles should be re-corked and stored in the fridge. This slows oxidation process and helps the wine keep for a few extra days.
• Investing in a wine preserver to remove air from the bottle can also further extend the life of an opened bottle.
