Expiration & Storage Tips
When does burgundy red wine expire?
Once purchased and unopened, Burgundy red wine can last anywhere from 2-10 years or even longer, depending on the quality and the wine's storage conditions. Do note that the wine will develop complex flavors as it ages. Once opened, it's best to consume the wine within 3-5 days, after which its quality begins to deteriorate. However, some bottles of high-quality Burgundy wine that haven't been completely finished might still taste alright for up to a week if properly stored. As for freezing, it's not typically recommended for this type of wine as it may alter the texture and flavor.
How do you tell if burgundy red wine is bad?
To determine if Burgundy red wine has gone bad, look for changes in its color, smell, and taste. If the wine has oxidized, its color may appear brownish, and it might smell like wet cardboard, vinegar, or sherry. When tasted, an overaged or spoiled wine might have a dull flavor, devoid of the fruitiness that a good Burgundy should exhibit. The taste may also be slightly sour or even downright vinegar-like.
Tips for storing burgundy red wine to extend shelf life
• Store the wine bottle horizontally. This keeps the cork moist, preventing it from drying out and letting air get into the wine.
• Keep the wine in a cool, dark place. Wine prefers a consistent temperature (about 12-15 degrees Celsius), away from light, especially direct sunlight, and vibration.
• If you've opened a bottle but haven't finished it, re-cork it swiftly. The less time the wine spends in contact with the air, the better. Consider investing in a proper wine stopper or vacuum pump.
• Consider storing an opened bottle in the fridge. While red wine is typically served at room temperature, the fridge can help slow down the oxidation process, thereby extending its shelf life. Just remember to take it out and let it warm up a little before serving.
