Expiration & Storage Tips
When does steak sauce expire?
Steak sauce, like most condiments, can last a pretty long time in your pantry or kitchen. Unopened, a bottle of steak sauce can generally last about a year to a year and a half beyond the printed expiration date when stored at room temperature. Once you've twisted open that cap, it can last about six months to a year in the fridge. Now, as for freezing steak sauce, while it is possible to do, it's not a common practice - freezing can change the texture and consistency of the sauce, reducing its quality.
How do you tell if steak sauce is bad?
With a hefty dose of vinegar and sugar acting as natural preservatives, steak sauce is less prone to bacterial growth than other food items. But even with these preservatives, it can still go bad. The first thing you'll want to look for is any noticeable changes in the color or smell - the fresh, rich, tangy scent should not become moldy or sour. Keep an eye out for possible mold growth in the bottle, or if the sauce becomes overly thick and no longer pours smoothly.
Tips for storing steak sauce to extend shelf life
• Always remember to keep your steak sauce bottle tightly sealed when not in use.
• After opening the bottle, it's best to store it in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life. Each time you use it, make sure that the cap is screwed on tight before putting it back into the refrigerator. The cool temperature of the fridge can reduce bacterial and fungal growth.
• Even though freezing is possible, it’s not recommended as it may affect the texture and flavor of the steak sauce.
• Keep the bottle in a dark, cool place before opening to avoid exposing it to excessive heat or sunlight, which can accelerate the spoiling process.
