Expiration & Storage Tips
When does limeade expire?
Unopened, store-bought limeade lasts for about 7 to 10 days past the printed date on the package if it's kept in the fridge. Once opened, it's best to consume limeade within 7 to 10 days. If it's homemade, limeade will usually last for about 1 to 2 days in the fridge. As for freezing, limeade can be frozen for up to 6 months. When thawing, it's best to leave it in the fridge overnight for a slow defrosting process.
How do you tell if limeade is bad?
Limeade usually takes a change in color, smell, or taste as its first signs of spoiling. It may develop a dull or darker color, and mold may even form on the surface. The liquid might look cloudy or clumpy. If it smells off, sour, or similar to vinegar instead of the expected tart and sweet, it is another obvious sign that limeade may have gone bad. As for taste, a shift from tangy to sour or a strong bitter taste indicates your limeade is no longer good to consume.
Tips for storing limeade to extend shelf life
• Always store limeade in the refrigerator to keep it fresh. It tastes best when served chilled.
• Remember to always seal the container tightly after use to avoid unwanted smells and tastes from the fridge affecting the limeade.
• If you know you won't finish it within a week, consider freezing it. Pour the limeade into ice cube trays for easy serving portions to add to water or beverages.
• Homemade limeade is best consumed fresh, but if you need to store it, try adding a bit of fresh lime juice to retain its tangy flavor.
