Expiration & Storage Tips
When does xylitol sweetener expire?
Xylitol sweetener, when kept unopened in its original packaging, can last indefinitely. However, once it has been opened, its shelf life is still quite impressive, lasting up to 2-3 years if stored properly. If you’ve mixed xylitol into a homemade recipe, the sweetener won't be your limiting factor, the other ingredients will define the shelf life of your dish. Similarly, freezing a xylitol-containing product won’t affect the sweetener; it’s the other components that could be affected by freezing.
How do you tell if xylitol sweetener is bad?
Determining if xylitol sweetener has gone bad isn't difficult. Despite its long shelf life, poor storage conditions can lead to degradation. If you notice a change in color, texture (it should be granular and not clumpy), smell, or taste, it is likely that the sweetener has been compromised. Xylitol should remain white, odorless and sweet.
Tips for storing xylitol sweetener to extend shelf life
• Keep the xylitol sweetener sealed in an airtight container. This will keep moisture out and reduce the risk of contamination.
• Store your xylitol in a cool, dry place. While it doesn’t need to be refrigerated, keeping it out of warm areas can prevent moisture absorption and clumping.
• Always use clean, dry utensils to scoop out the xylitol. Any moisture can decrease its shelf life.
• If you buy in bulk, try keeping the bulk of the product in a larger container and refilling a smaller, everyday use container. This can minimize the sweetener's exposure to air and potential contaminants.
