Expiration & Storage Tips
When does chipotle chile expire?
Dried chipotle chiles are great for long-term storage as they can last up to 2 to 3 years if unopened and properly stored. Once the package is opened, they should ideally be consumed within 6 months for the best flavor. If you've rehydrated some chipotle chiles, they should be used immediately or stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Chipotle chile powder, if stored properly can last 2 to 3 years past its printed date. Frozen chipotle chiles can last up to 12 months, ensure to wrap tightly or store in an airtight container to prevent freezer burns.
How do you tell if chipotle chile is bad?
Once chipotle chiles go bad, you'll notice significant changes. If the color has faded and they look dull, or if they emit a mildew-like smell rather than their normal smoky scent, then it's time to throw them out. For chipotle powder, if it's lost its vibrant reddish-brown color or its smoky aroma, that’s a signal it's past its prime. Check for presence of mold, bugs and moisture too.
Tips for storing chipotle chile to extend shelf life
• Always store your chipotle chiles or chipotle chile powder in a cool, dark, dry place to extend its shelf life.
• For opened packages, ensure to seal properly or transfer to an airtight container to prevent moisture and air exposure that can degrade the quality.
• For hydrating chipotle chiles, only rehydrate what you need. Leftover can be refrigerated in a sealed container, but it's best to use within a few days.
• Freezing chipotle chiles in a tightly sealed container or bag can extend their life. To defrost, simply take out the number of chiles you need and let them come to room temperature.
