Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Layer Cake expire?
Pre-packaged layer cakes often include a best-by date, which is typically 2-3 months from the production date. Once opened, it’s best to eat the cake within a week. If the cake is homemade, it should be consumed within 2-3 days if kept at room temperature, within 1 week if refrigerated, or up to 3 months if frozen.
How do you tell if Layer Cake is bad?
The easiest way to tell if your layer cake has gone bad is by checking for visible signs of mold, usually appearing as green, blue, or white spots. A bad odor and change in texture, with the cake becoming exceptionally dry or overly moist, can also indicate spoilage. Taste should be the last test - if it tastes sour or off, it’s definitely time to toss it.
Tips for storing Layer Cake to extend shelf life
• Always store your layer cake in an airtight container to prevent air exposure which can dry it out.
• If you're not eating the cake within a day or two, consider refrigerating it. Remember to take it out a couple of hours before serving, as it should be served at room temperature for best taste.
• Freezing is a great option for long term storage. To freeze, wait for the cake to cool completely, then wrap each piece tightly in plastic wrap followed by aluminum foil. This ensures it remains moist and prevents freezer burn.
• Defrost frozen cake in the refrigerator overnight. This slow process helps the cake maintain its texture. For quicker defrosting, you can leave it at room temperature but note that this might make the cake a bit soggy.
