Expiration & Storage Tips
When does flavored gelatin expire?
Typically an unopened package of flavored gelatin can last indefinitely if stored properly due to its low moisture content. The flavor and gel-setting ability might decline after about 18-24 months from the print date on the package, but it would still be safe to eat. Once opened, if stored well, it can still last indefinitely, but it's best to use within a year for maximum flavor and setting quality. Homemade gelatin treats usually last about 7-10 days in the refrigerator. Freezing is not recommended for prepared gelatin deserts as it can change the texture significantly upon defrosting.
How do you tell if flavored gelatin is bad?
With packaged gelatin, it's quite tough to tell if it's bad as it can last indefinitely. However, if you notice any discoloration, off smell or it doesn’t set properly when used, it could mean the product is past its prime. For prepared gelatin desserts, if it has become overly watery, is developing mold, or has an odd smell, these are signs that it has gone bad and should no longer be consumed.
Tips for storing flavored gelatin to extend shelf life
• Store unopened flavored gelatin packages in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
• Once opened, keep the package sealed tightly or transfer into an airtight container.
• Prepared gelatin desserts should always be refrigerated. Cover it with plastic wrap or store in a sealed container to prevent it from absorbing odors of other foods in the refrigerator.
• Avoid freezing prepared gelatin desserts as it could lead to a watery, grainy mush upon thawing.
• To maximize the shelf life of homemade gelatin desserts, don’t leave them at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
