Expiration & Storage Tips
When does onion dip expire?
When purchased store-bought and unopened, onion dip can usually last up to two weeks past the printed date on the package. Once opened, it’s best to be consumed within one week and should definitely be thrown out if it's been sitting in your fridge for over two weeks due to potential bacteria growth. If you've made your homemade onion dip, we recommend consuming it within 3-5 days. If you decide to freeze your onion dip, it can last up to 3 months. Defrost it overnight in the refrigerator before use for the best texture.
How do you tell if onion dip is bad?
The first sign that your onion dip may have gone bad is a change in appearance. Any dark, discolored areas, or if the dip appears to be dry, it may be a clear indication of bacterial growth. Once you've checked the appearance, give the dip a quick smell. If it has a rancid, off-putting aroma, it’s best to throw it out. If the dip has been sitting for an extended period of time and has grown mold or the container has swelled, it has definitely expired and should not be consumed.
Tips for storing onion dip to extend shelf life
• Always store your onion dip in an airtight container. This keeps unwanted bacteria out while maintaining freshness.
• Keep the onion dip in the coldest part of your fridge, not in the door compartments as the temperature can fluctuate more there.
• If you know you won’t be using your onion dip within the typical refrigerated window, consider freezing it right away. Just remember to plan ahead and defrost it in your fridge the day before you need it.
• Finally, avoid ‘double-dipping’ or repeatedly using the same spoon or knife. This can introduce bacteria into the dip which accelerates spoilage.
