Expiration & Storage Tips
When does breadstick expire?
Unopened canned or packaged breadsticks have a shelf life of about 6-9 months past the printed date on the package. Once opened, breadsticks should be consumed within 1-2 weeks, and homemade breadsticks can typically last for 2-3 days at room temperature, or longer if stored in the refrigerator or freezer. For those who like to keep breadsticks for an extended period, freezing is an excellent option. Frozen breadsticks can last up to 3 months.
How do you tell if breadstick is bad?
When checking if breadsticks have gone bad, look for telltale signs of spoilage such as mold (green, black or white spots), a musty smell, or an overly hard texture. If the breadsticks crumble easily or have lost their usual flavor, it's a fair indication they’re not fresh. Always discard breadsticks that exhibit these signs of spoilage, as consuming bad bread can cause foodborne illnesses.
Tips for storing breadstick to extend shelf life
• Always seal the breadstick container after using. This helps to maintain freshness.
• If possible, store breadsticks in a cool, dark and dry place to slow down the degradation process.
• Avoid storing breadsticks in humid areas where mold could develop.
• Consider using a bread box to store your breadsticks. Bread boxes allow just enough air circulation to prevent decay but shield the breadsticks from light, heat and large temperature fluctuations.
• If you purchase breadsticks in bulk, consider freezing the portion you won’t consume shortly. You can defrost them at room temperature or even heat them gently in an oven when you're ready to eat.
