Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Tuna Melt expire?
A homemade tuna melt, if refrigerated, should be consumed within two days. If you've ordered a tuna melt takeaway, it can last up to 3-4 days in the fridge. Freezing isn't recommended for a tuna melt due to the combined nature of the ingredients (tuna, cheese, and bread) and potential texture degradation upon defrosting.
How do you tell if Tuna Melt is bad?
The smell is your main indicator. If the sandwich begins to emit a strong unpleasant and sour smell, it has gone bad. You can also check the texture. If the bread has become soggy and the tuna looks darker than when it was fresh or has a slimy texture, it has likely spoiled. If there's mold, toss it out immediately.
Tips for storing Tuna Melt to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate the tuna melt within two hours of making or receiving it.
• Store the tuna melt in a shallow, airtight container or wrap it tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap.
• Do not store the tuna melt in the door shelves of your fridge as the temperature can fluctuate. The back of the fridge is typically the coldest and best spot.
