Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Chicken Enchiladas expire?
Chicken enchiladas, like many prepared foods, last about 3-4 days in the refrigerator after being prepared or opened. They can stay good for up to 6 months if frozen right after preparation. The expiration date on the package only applies if the enchiladas remain unopened and stored at refrigerated temperatures. Please remember that the printed date on the package is a suggested sell-by date and not necessarily the expiration date.
How do you tell if Chicken Enchiladas is bad?
While it takes some practice, there are several signs that your chicken enchiladas have gone bad. The first sign of spoilage is a significant change in color, such as turning grey or brown, which could be the result of bacteria growth. The second sign is a sour, off-putting smell. If you also notice a slimy or moldy texture, then they are definitely not safe to eat. And in case you have any doubt, remember this rule: when in doubt, throw it out!
Tips for storing Chicken Enchiladas to extend shelf life
• Always store your chicken enchiladas in the refrigerator or freezer, never at room temperature.
• For short term storage, use airtight containers or aluminum foil in the refrigerator to slow down bacteria growth.
• For longer term storage, consider freezing them. To freeze, wrap each enchilada individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before putting them in a zip-top bag or airtight container. This way, you can defrost and heat a single serving at a time.
• Always defrost in the refrigerator overnight or in the microwave using the defrost setting. Do not defrost at room temperature, as it can cause bacteria to multiply.
