Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Pistachio Ice Cream expire?
When your pistachio ice cream is unopened, it can generally last two to three months past the printed date on the package if stored properly. However, once it’s opened, it should ideally be consumed within one to two weeks. By placing a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the opened ice cream before replacing the lid, you can extend its lifespan by an additional week. If you've made homemade pistachio ice cream, it's best to consume it within 2 weeks. As for frozen pistachio ice cream, it should taste its best within two months of freezing.
How do you tell if Pistachio Ice Cream is bad?
If your pistachio ice cream has gone bad, the most obvious sign will be a layer of ice crystals that have formed on the top surface, a change in color to a lighter, yellowish tint, or a stale or unpleasant odor when you open the container. It may also feel harder and lose its creamy consistency. If you see, smell, or taste any of these changes, it's best to err on the side of caution and throw it out.
Tips for storing Pistachio Ice Cream to extend shelf life
• Always store your pistachio ice cream in the main part of the freezer, not the door sections, to maintain a consistent temperature.
• To minimize ice crystal formation, press a piece of wax paper onto the surface of the ice cream before replacing the lid.
• When you're done serving, put your ice cream back in the freezer immediately. It's important to limit the number of thaw and refreeze cycles to keep your pistachio ice cream at its best.
• Keep it in an air-tight container to keep the flavor fresh and to prevent it from absorbing odors from other food in your freezer.
