Expiration & Storage Tips
When does shredded wheat cereal expire?
Shredded wheat cereal typically remains fresh and ready to eat for approximately 6-8 months past the date printed on the package when unopened. After the box has been opened, I recommend using the cereal within a month for the freshest taste and optimal crunchiness. While you can technically still eat the cereal after this, it may start to taste stale. Freezing isn't a typical method of storing this product and might not be beneficial.
How do you tell if shredded wheat cereal is bad?
Shredded wheat cereal doesn't usually become 'bad' in the way that some foods do (like developing mold), but it can become stale. Signs of staleness in shredded wheat include loss of its crunch and a stale odor. In the rare case it's been stored in damp conditions, check for any discoloration or mold. If in doubt, it's best to play it safe and discard.
Tips for storing shredded wheat cereal to extend shelf life
• Keep the cereal in a cool, dry place out of direct light – this environment is best for preserving its freshness.
• Once opened, make sure the inner bag is properly sealed after each use. You don't want excess air getting in and hastening the staling process.
• Consider transferring the cereal to an airtight container after opening to extend its crunchy life. This would be especially useful if you don't consume the cereal very frequently.
• Avoid storing the cereal near strong-smelling foods like onions or garlic, as it can absorb those odors.
