Expiration & Storage Tips
When does strawberry yogurt expire?
Strawberry yogurt, like all dairy products, comes with an expiration date printed on its package. If unopened, it can last a week to ten days past the printed date when stored in the fridge at 4 degrees Celsius or 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Once opened, however, the yogurt usually lasts about 5 to 7 days if it is promptly resealed and stored in the refrigerator. When frozen, the yogurt can last up to 1 to 2 months. Do keep in mind that freezing may alter the texture of the yogurt, making it somewhat grainy when defrosted.
How do you tell if strawberry yogurt is bad?
There are several tell-tale signs to look out for to determine if the strawberry yogurt has gone bad. The yogurt may develop an off or sour smell, and it might taste more tangy than usual. Any visible mold or discoloration is a clear sign the yogurt has spoiled. Also, if the yogurt has separated into solid and liquid parts, or if a lot of liquid (whey) is pooling at the top, it's time to throw it away. However, a small amount of clear liquid on top can be normal after opening and does not necessarily mean it has spoiled.
Tips for storing strawberry yogurt to extend shelf life
• Always store the yogurt in the refrigerator at the recommended temperature of 4 degrees Celsius or 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
• After using, make sure to promptly reseal the yogurt container to protect it from any contaminants in the air.
• Avoid storing the yogurt in the fridge door, where the temperature fluctuates the most. Instead, store it in the main body of the fridge where the temperature is more constant.
• For extended use, you can freeze the yogurt. However, be aware that freezing may alter its texture. If you plan to use the yogurt for cooking or baking, this should not be an issue.
• If you've frozen the yogurt, defrost it in the fridge for several hours or overnight before consumption. Never refreeze yogurt once it's been defrosted.
