Expiration & Storage Tips
When does cherry yogurt expire?
An unopened container of commercial cherry yogurt generally lasts up to two weeks beyond the 'sell by' date printed on the package. Once the package is opened, it should be eaten within a week. Homemade cherry yogurt, lacking the preservatives of commercial versions, typically lasts about a week in the refrigerator. If frozen, cherry yogurt can last up to two months, but the texture and taste might change slightly post-defrost.
How do you tell if cherry yogurt is bad?
There are several ways to determine if your cherry yogurt has gone bad. First, check for visual changes. Any mold, or discoloration is a clear sign of spoilage. Also, watch out for any signs of excessive or abnormal liquid separation. While a small amount of liquid on top is normal, significant liquid separation could indicate spoilage. Lastly, sniff and taste the yogurt. An off smell or sour taste can indicate that the yogurt is no longer good to eat. Always remember, when in doubt, it's best to play it safe and throw it out.
Tips for storing cherry yogurt to extend shelf life
• Always store cherry yogurt in the refrigerator at temperatures below 40°F (4°C), and do not let it sit out at room temperature for more than two hours.
• For longer preservation, consider placing it towards the back of the fridge where temperatures are typically a bit cooler.
• If you've opened the yogurt but won't be able to finish it within a week, consider freezing it. It's best to freeze in small portions for quicker and easier defrosting.
• When defrosting frozen yogurt, it's best to do so gradually in the refrigerator or in a bowl of cold water. Once thawed, stir well to combine any separated components.
