Expiration & Storage Tips
When does quail eggs expire?
Quail eggs last for about 2-3 weeks if stored in the refrigerator, even after the 'sell by' date on the container has passed. Once you crack those petite shells open, however, their goodness lasts for only 2-4 days when refrigerated. If you boil quail eggs, they can last in the fridge for up to a week. Freezing is uncommon due to their high water content which could lead to harmful bacteria growth during thawing.
How do you tell if quail eggs is bad?
To tell if your quail eggs have turned, there's a simple water test you can use. Fill a bowl with cold water and gently lower the egg into the water. If it sinks, it's fresh; if it stands upright on the bottom, it's still safe but should be used soon. If it floats, it's an indication that the egg is bad. Aside from the float test, bad eggs will develop a distinct, strong sulfuric smell, and may have a slimy or powdery appearance. If you're still unsure, crack the egg onto a plate and look for any discoloration or off-putting smells.
Tips for storing quail eggs to extend shelf life
• Always store quail eggs in the refrigerator, ideally in their original carton or a dedicated egg container.
• Rotate your eggs. If you're storing multiple batches, use the older ones first.
• Don't wash quail eggs until you're ready to use them. Washing removes the bloom, a natural protective layer, and can increase the chance of bacteria entering the shell.
• If you find yourself with more quail eggs than you can consume, consider pickling them! Pickled quail eggs can be stored in the fridge for several months.
