Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Baked Brie expire?
Baked Brie, like most dairy products, has a fairly limited shelf life. It can last between a week to two weeks when properly stored in the refrigerator. However, once the bottle is opened, the shelf life shortens to 3 to 5 days if kept in the refrigerator. Freezing is not commonly done but if you do find it necessary, know that Brie can be frozen for up to 6 months but the texture damages considerably.
How do you tell if Baked Brie is bad?
The best way to tell if your Baked Brie has gone bad is by its smell and texture. Brie typically has a strong, earthy smell. However, if the smell becomes pungent or unpleasant, it's likely spoiled. The same applies to texture - if your Brie has turned hard or developed a crunchy exterior, it's time to discard it. Furthermore, any growth of mould apart from the white bloomy rind on the exterior, especially in colors like blue, green, or black, signals that the Brie is no longer safe to consume.
Tips for storing Baked Brie to extend shelf life
• Always wrap your Brie in wax paper or parchment wrap and then loosely in plastic wrap. This allows the cheese to breathe without drying out.
• If you have a specialty cheese cave or cheese grotto, this would be the ideal storage point for your Brie. They maintain the perfect temperature and humidity for cheese storage.
• Don't cut your Brie into pieces before storage unless necessary as this will decrease its shelf life. Instead, cut only what you need and store the rest.
• Once opened, consume within a short time period to ensure it's at its freshest.
