Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Bottled Water expire?
Bottled water can last indefinitely if stored correctly. However, most manufacturers typically put a two year expiration date on it. This is more due to regulations and to guarantee optimum taste than safety. Unopened, it lasts 2-3 years from the printed expiry date. Once opened, it's recommended to consume it within a week to two weeks. Storing it in the refrigerator after opening can extend this a bit longer. Freezing is not generally recommended as it can compromise the integrity of the bottle, though the actual water once thawed would be safe to consume.
How do you tell if Bottled Water is bad?
While it's hard for bottled water to go 'bad' in the traditional sense, it can begin to taste stale or have a plastic-like flavor due to leaching of plastic into the water over time. You should also check the clarity of the water. If it appears cloudy or you see particles or sediment, it's best to discard the bottle. Remember, when in doubt, throw it out.
Tips for storing Bottled Water to extend shelf life
• Keep bottled water in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
• Do not store bottled water near chemicals, solvents or harsh odors, as plastic bottles can absorb them and affect the taste of the water.
• After opening, always keep the cap on when not in use to prevent contamination.
• If you've used a bottle, do not refill it. Reusing a bottled water bottle can introduce bacteria to the water and potentially compromise its safety.
• Do not freeze bottled water as the freezing process can cause the plastic bottle to leach chemicals into the water.
