Expiration & Storage Tips
When does pierogi expire?
Unopened packages of store-bought frozen pierogi can last up to one year in the freezer. Once opened, it's best to use them within three days when stored in the fridge. Room temperature is not a safe storage method for pierogi. If you have homemade pierogi, they can be chilled in the fridge for up to three days or frozen for up to three months. To maximize preservation of your pierogi, avoid repeated freezing and thawing cycles.
How do you tell if pierogi is bad?
If pierogi have found themselves in the realm of spoilage, they may emit an unpleasant or off aroma, often described as sour or similar to that of rotten eggs. Discoloration or the presence of visible mold also indicates that your pierogi have passed their prime. Lastly, if the texture of the dough or filling seems slimy or exceptionally hard, it's time to dispose of your pierogi.
Tips for storing pierogi to extend shelf life
• Store your pierogi in the coldest part of your fridge, usually the back, as soon as possible after cooking or purchasing. Airtight containers or freezer bags will work best.
• For freezing pierogi, lay them flat and separated on a baking sheet first. Once frozen, you can transfer them to an airtight container or bag to prevent them from sticking together.
• Label all pierogi with the date you made or bought them to keep track of their freshness. This way, you’ll ensure you use them while they're best.
• Don’t defrost pierogi at room temperature to avoid bacterial growth. Rather, you should place them in the fridge and let them defrost slowly. If you're in a rush, they can be cooked from frozen - they'll just need a little longer.
