Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Crab Dip expire?
Commercially purchased crab dip, unopened, can usually last in the fridge for up to one week past the sell-by date on the package. Once opened, crab dip should be consumed within three to four days. Homemade crab dip should always be refrigerated and consumed within three days. If frozen, crab dip can extend its shelf life to two months. However, the texture may change upon defrosting.
How do you tell if Crab Dip is bad?
Smelling the crab dip is your first indication of whether or not it's gone bad. Good crab dip has a fresh, mildly seafood scent. If it has a strong, unpleasant or sour smell, it's likely spoiled. Finding mold or discoloration on your crab dip is also a clear sign it should not be consumed. Always remember that when in doubt, err on the side of caution and throw it out.
Tips for storing Crab Dip to extend shelf life
• Always store crab dip in the refrigerator, ideally at 40°F (4°C) or lower.
• Try to consume it within the 'consume by' date or within three to four days of opening.
• For homemade crab dip, place it in an airtight container before storing it in the fridge.
• If you have a large amount of crab dip, you can freeze it to extend its life. To freeze, place in a tightly sealed container. For defrosting, let it sit in the fridge overnight.
• Try to avoid repeatedly taking the dip in and out of the fridge to limit the temperature fluctuation, as this can spoil it faster.
