Expiration & Storage Tips
When does calvado expire?
Calvados, like other spirits, does not expire in the conventional sense. An unopened bottle of Calvados can last indefinitely if stored properly. The quality might depreciate over long periods of time, but it will be safe to consume. Once opened, however, the quality and flavor profile can start to diminish after 1-2 years. It won't be harmful, but it might not provide the same sensory experience.
How do you tell if calvado is bad?
Although Calvados doesn't spoil per se, there are ways to tell if it is no longer at its best. Check the smell - if it's become pungent or off-putting, you might want to discard it. The same goes for any unfamiliar flavors on tasting, as they denote an altered quality. You can also physically inspect the bottle, looking for a loss of color or any unusual sediment at the bottom. Just remember, even if the Calvados seems okay, trust your instincts if something seems off.
Tips for storing calvado to extend shelf life
• Always store your Calvados in a cool, dark place, away from light and heat. This will prevent any unwanted aging or flavor changes.
• Keep it upright! Storing spirits like Calvados horizontally can lead to the cork corrupting and ruining the drink inside.
• Once opened, limit exposure with air. To achieve this, keep the lid or cap tightly sealed when not being used to maintain its quality.
• Use vacuum wine stoppers to remove air from the bottle. It’s a cheap and effective way to extend the longevity of your spirit once opened.
