Expiration & Storage Tips
When does banana extract expire?
Unopened, banana extract almost always comes with a 'best by' date on the packaging, which is typically about 3-5 years from the time of production. However, banana extract can actually remain viable for a much longer period, if stored correctly. Once opened, it should be used within 1-2 years for optimal flavor and effectiveness. As for homemade banana extract, it's usually best to consume it within 6 months to a year. Freezing banana extract is not recommended because it can reduce the quality of the flavoring.
How do you tell if banana extract is bad?
Check for any mold, rough spots or unusual discoloration. If the extract begins to smell slightly sour or off, or it looks cloudy or contains solid particles, it might be time to replace it. The flavor can also test if it's bad. If it doesn't taste right or has lost its flavor, it's best to discard it.
Tips for storing banana extract to extend shelf life
• Always store banana extract in a cool, dark place away from heat and light, like your pantry or a kitchen cabinet.
• After each use, make sure to tightly secure the cap to prevent any air exposure.
• Keep the extract in its original, airtight container. If that's not possible, any dark glass bottle will do in a pinch.
• Refrigeration isn't necessary, and can in fact cause your extract to become cloudy, but it won't harm the extract if you prefer to store it there.
