Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Hand Pies expire?
Hand pies, whether savory or sweet, tend to last a good 3-5 days in the refrigerator if they are kept properly sealed. Unopened and appropriately packaged hand pies bought from the store will generally last about 2 weeks if refrigerated and not past its 'best by' date. Once opened, it's best to consume them within that 3-5 day timeframe. If you decide to freeze your hand pies, they can last up to 3 months.
How do you tell if Hand Pies is bad?
Signs that your hand pies have gone bad can be seen in both the crust and the filling. The crust will become soggy and lose its flaky texture, or could become exceedingly hard if it's been dried out in the fridge. Any strange smell or noticeable mold are clear indications it's gone bad. The filling, if meat or dairy based, may also develop an off smell or slight discoloration.
Tips for storing Hand Pies to extend shelf life
• Always store your hand pies in an airtight container or bag to prevent them from drying out.
• For a longer shelf life, consider freezing your hand pies. Before freezing, let them cool completely, then wrap individually in plastic wrap and place in a sealed bag or container.
• To thaw frozen hand pies, simply transfer them to the fridge 24 hours before you intend to eat them. For a quick heat-up, pop them in the microwave for a few seconds or warm them in the oven.
• Always remember, when storing hand pies with a meat or cheese filling, keeping them refrigerated is crucial to prevent spoilage.
