In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water (110°F). Let proof for 10 minutes.
2
In a large mixing bowl, combine hot water, granulated sugar, salt, vegetable oil, and 3 cups of all-purpose flour. Mix together until well combined.
3
Add the yeast mixture to the large mixing bowl and mix well.
4
Gradually add the remaining 3 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing after each addition. The dough should start pulling away from the sides of the bowl when ready.
5
Cover the dough with a clean towel and let rest for 10 minutes.
SHAPING
6
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
7
Divide the dough into three equal parts. On a lightly floured surface, roll each part into a 9x12 inch rectangle.
8
Roll each rectangle up lengthwise, like a jelly roll, tuck and pinch the ends under, and shape into a French bread loaf.
9
Place the loaves seam side down on a greased baking sheet or parchment-lined baking tray, spaced evenly apart.
10
With a sharp knife, make 3-4 diagonal cuts about 1/4 inch deep on the top of each loaf.
11
Brush the loaves with the beaten egg evenly.
12
Allow the loaves to rise uncovered for 30-40 minutes in a warm, draft-free place.
BAKING
13
Bake the loaves for 18-22 minutes or until golden brown and crusty on the outside. The bread should sound hollow when tapped lightly on the bottom.
