Expiration & Storage Tips
When does animal cracker expire?
In general, unopened animal crackers will stay fresh from 6 to 9 months past the printed date on the package. Once opened, they are best consumed within 1 to 2 weeks assuming they are properly stored to prevent moisture and air exposure. If you've decided to freeze them, which can be done, they can last for up to 2 years. Just make sure to place them in a heavy-duty freezer bag to avoid freezer burn.
How do you tell if animal cracker is bad?
The best way to tell if animal crackers have gone bad is to look, smell, and finally taste. They should retain their original light color; any major discolorations or mold are clear signs that they're spoiled. A stale or off smell is another key clue. Lastly, if you bite into a cracker and it's not crispy but rather soft, mushy or has a stale taste, it's probably past its prime and should be discarded.
Tips for storing animal cracker to extend shelf life
• Always keep your animal crackers in a cool, dry place away from humidity, such as in a pantry or in a cupboard.
• Once opened, it's best to store them in an airtight container. If the original box or bag is not resealable, transfer them to a zip-top bag or a Tupperware container.
• To keep the crackers crisp for longer, you can place a folded paper towel inside the storage container. It will absorb any excess moisture.
• If you decide to freeze animal crackers, use a heavy-duty freezer bag and squeeze all air out before sealing. To thaw them, just leave the bag at room temperature for a few hours.
