Expiration & Storage Tips
When does almond joy candy bar expire?
An unopened Almond Joy usually has a shelf life of about 6-8 months when stored correctly. Always check the 'Best By' date printed on the package just to be sure. Once opened, an Almond Joy should ideally be consumed within two days for freshness as exposure to air will cause the bar to harden, however, it may still be edible till about a week depending on its storage condition.
How do you tell if almond joy candy bar is bad?
There are two main signs to look out for when checking if an Almond Joy has gone bad. One is the changing of color; if the chocolate coating turns a dull rather than glossy look, often with a grey or white powdery residue, the candy has likely expired. This is called chocolate bloom and is caused by sugar or fat separating from the chocolate due to improper storage. It's not harmful, but it does affect texture and flavor. The second sign is texture; if the bar is unnaturally hard or the coconut filling is dry, it's best to throw it out.
Tips for storing almond joy candy bar to extend shelf life
• Always store candy bars in a cool, dry place where the temperature is below 75°F (24°C) to prevent from melting.
• Keep them away from sunlight as it can cause discoloration and change in taste.
• If you don't plan to eat the candy bar right away, putting it in an airtight container can prevent moisture and outside odors from affecting its flavor.
• If you live in a hot climate and can't avoid high temperatures, storing your Almond Joy in the fridge is an option. Let it come to room temperature before eating to really enjoy the flavors.
• To extend the shelf life further, you can freeze them. Just wrap the bar in aluminum foil then put it in a sealed plastic bag before freezing. When ready to eat, leave it out at room temperature to defrost.
