Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Snack Mix expire?
Store-bought snack mix usually has an expiration date printed on the package, typically ranging from 6-9 months from the date of purchase. However, once the package is opened, it is best to consume the snack mix within 1-2 weeks as it may start to lose its crunch.
If you’ve prepared your own homemade snack mix, you should aim to enjoy it within two weeks.
For leftover snack mix that you want to keep fresh longer, you can freeze it. In the freezer, snack mix can stay tasty for 2-3 months. When you're ready to enjoy it again, just move it to the fridge to thaw overnight.
How do you tell if Snack Mix is bad?
Determining if your snack mix has gone bad is similar to checking other dry, crunchy foods. The first sign of snack mix going bad is usually a loss of its signature crunch. Over time the varied ingredients may go stale, leaving your mix with a chewy or soggy texture. If you notice your snack mix doesn’t have its usual crispness, this could be a sign that it's past its prime.
Next, visually inspect the mix, especially the nuts and fruits. If they've become discolored, shriveled, or if you see any signs of mold, it’s time to throw it away.
Lastly, do a quick sniff test. Bad snack mix might have an off, potentially rancid smell, particularly due to any nuts in the mix.
Tips for storing Snack Mix to extend shelf life
• Always try to store snack mix in airtight containers. This will help keep moisture out and preserve your snack mix's crispy goodness.
• Avoid storing your snack mix in humid or moist environments, as this can speed up the process of your snacks becoming stale.
• Keep your snack mix in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard. Heat and direct sunlight can diminish quality and lead to faster spoilage.
• If freezing your snack mix, wrap it well in plastic wrap before placing it in an airtight container or ziplock bag to protect it from air and freezer burn.
