Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Mexican Chicken expire?
Mexican Chicken, like most cooked poultry, should be stored in your refrigerator within two hours of cooking. It typically lasts for about 3-4 days in the fridge, if stored properly. After this time, the risk of food poisoning increases. If you don't think you'll eat leftovers within four days, freeze them immediately. Mexican chicken can be frozen for months but it is best consumed within 2-3 months for flavor and texture.
How do you tell if Mexican Chicken is bad?
A clear tell for spoiled chicken is a bad smell. If the chicken smells like rotten eggs or sulfur, it's time to throw it out. In addition, if the chicken begins to look grey instead of white or brown, discard it. Finally, a change of texture such as a slimy, sticky or otherwise disagreeable touch may indicate the chicken is bad.
Tips for storing Mexican Chicken to extend shelf life
• Store cooked Mexican Chicken in shallow airtight containers or wrap tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil or plastic wrap.
• Using a thermometer, make sure the center of the chicken reaches at least 165 degrees F when reheating. It’s not necessary to bring it up to the original cooking temperature.
• If freezing, portion the chicken into meal size portions before freezing for quick and easy reheating.
• Clearly label your frozen chicken with the date and type of meat to avoid future confusion.
• Always thaw chicken in the refrigerator; using the microwave or leaving it on the counter to thaw may lead to uneven thawing and potential bacterial growth.
