Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Bang Bang Shrimp expire?
After cooking, Bang Bang Shrimp can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. If not yet cooked, fresh shrimp should be used within 2 days of purchase or it can be frozen and use within 3 months. Store-bought, frozen Bang Bang Shrimp usually have a use-by date printed on the package, which is typically about 6 to 12 months from the date of purchase, assuming it has been kept frozen. Once the package is opened, or if the shrimp is homemade, it should ideally be used immediately, but can be refrigerated for a day or two.
How do you tell if Bang Bang Shrimp is bad?
Bad shrimp may develop a slimy or sticky texture and an off smell is the strongest indicator that the shrimp has gone bad. Cooked shrimp that is spoiled will have a sour or frivolous smell. Visual discoloration or black spots on the flesh of the shrimp also indicates that it should not be eaten. If the shrimp feels gritty, like sand, this could be a sign of freezer burn. The taste of spoiled shrimp would be sour, the texture would be tough and the flesh might have a whitish structure, instead of being clear and shiny.
Tips for storing Bang Bang Shrimp to extend shelf life
• Store Bang Bang Shrimp in airtight containers or wrap tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil or plastic wrap to keep air out.
• If freezing, aim to freeze it as soon as possible to maintain quality and safety, ideally in portions that you will likely use in a single eating occasion to avoid repeatedly reheating the food.
• Don’t overcrowd the pan while frying your shrimp. It ensures even cooking and prevents the shrimp from sticking to the pan.
• Always defrost your shrimp, whether it's cooked or uncooked in the refrigerator and not at room temperature. This will reduce the risk of developing bacteria on the shrimp.
