Expiration & Storage Tips
When does coconut milk yogurt expire?
Unopened, coconut milk yogurt lasts for about 2-3 weeks past the date printed on the package, depending on the quality of your fridge. Once opened, it should be eaten within 5-7 days. If frozen, it can last up to 2 months, but the texture might change upon defrosting.
How do you tell if coconut milk yogurt is bad?
If the coconut milk yogurt has gone bad, you'll notice several signs. Firstly, the smell: if it has a strong sour or foul odor, it's time to toss it. The consistency may also change; if it appears curdled or has a slimy texture, it's not safe to eat. Mold growth, visible as fuzzy spots of green, black, or white, is another sure sign that your yogurt has turned bad.
Tips for storing coconut milk yogurt to extend shelf life
• Always keep your coconut milk yogurt stored in the refrigerator, ideally at a temperature of 40°F (4°C) or below.
• Keep your yogurt well-sealed when not in use to protect it from other foods' odors and maintain its freshness.
• Don't leave your yogurt out of the fridge for more than two hours, as bacteria can multiply rapidly at room temperature.
• When freezing, you should transfer the yogurt into an airtight container or heavy-duty freezer bag. Remember to leave some headspace for it to expand.
• To defrost, move the coconut milk yogurt from the freezer to the fridge and let it thaw slowly. This will retain its texture and flavor as much as possible.
• Don't eat yogurt that's been frozen for more than two months. While it won't make you sick, the quality will be significantly reduced.
