Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Candied Bacon expire?
This delicious treat can actually be fairly long-lasting if stored properly. Unopened, well-packaged candied bacon can be safe to eat for around 2 months past the printed date on its package. However, keep in mind that this can vary depending on the quality of the bacon used and the preservation methods applied during its candying. Once opened, candied bacon will generally last about 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator. If frozen, you can expect it to last up to 6 months while retaining its quality. Like most foods, it's always best to adhere to the 'use-by' date on the package as accurate guidance.
How do you tell if Candied Bacon is bad?
It's not hard to identify when candied bacon has gone bad. First things first, a funky or sour smell is a sure sign your bacon should be tossed out. Next, if you notice a change in the color to green, gray or blue, don't eat it. Finally, if it has slime on its surface or the fatty parts have become very dull and dark, it’s best to throw it out.
Tips for storing Candied Bacon to extend shelf life
• Store your candied bacon in air-tight containers or resealable plastic bags in your refrigerator. Make sure to get all the air out before sealing.
• If you plan to freeze your candied bacon, wrap individual pieces in wax or parchment paper before storing them in air-tight container or freezer-safe plastic bags. That way, you can easily grab a piece when you want one without them all sticking together.
• Avoid storing it in the door of your fridge, as the temperature is less constant there and could lead to faster spoilage.
• Not going to consume it soon? Remember, freezing is your best bet for long term storage.
