Expiration & Storage Tips
When does anise liqueur expire?
While unopened anise liqueur can last indefinitely, its flavor can begin to degrade after one to two years due to evaporation and oxidation. Once the bottle has been opened, it is best consumed within one year, as the exposure to oxygen will start to alter the taste. Freezing anise liqueurs is not recommended because it can cause separation and potential loss of flavor.
How do you tell if anise liqueur is bad?
You can tell anise liqueur has gone bad if you notice any sediment in the bottle, this is particularly likely if the liqueur has been stored in fluctuating temperatures. The smell may also change, losing some of its vibrant anise aroma; instead, it might smell dull or even a bit harsh. The taste will also be a giveaway - if it tastes sour or off, it’s likely gone bad.
Tips for storing anise liqueur to extend shelf life
• Store your anise liqueur in a cool, dark place such as a pantry or cabinet.
• Once opened, always seal the bottle tightly after every use to limit the amount of air interacting with the liqueur.
• Avoid storing the liqueur in hot places or areas with a lot of light, such as on top of the fridge or near a window. This will prevent the degradation of the flavor and keep it fresher for longer.
• If you only have a small amount left, consider transferring the liqueur to a smaller bottle. This reduces the air-to-liqueur ratio and helps maintain a better flavor profile.
