Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Decaffeinated Coffee expire?
Unopened decaf coffee (whole beans or ground) can last up to 9 months in the pantry, or up to 2 years in the freezer. Once opened, it should be used within 2-3 weeks if stored in a pantry, or within 1-2 months if kept in the freezer. Instant decaf coffee, however, can last up to 2 years past the printed date both unopened and opened when stored in a cool, dry location.
How do you tell if Decaffeinated Coffee is bad?
When decaf coffee goes bad, it may become stale, yielding a dull and weak flavor when brewed. It won't become harmful to consume, but it won't taste as good as fresh coffee. It can also absorb strong smells from its surroundings, which can taint the flavor. In rare cases, if it's exposed to moisture, it could grow mold. Inspect the coffee for any visible signs of mold before consuming. If in doubt, throw it out!
Tips for storing Decaffeinated Coffee to extend shelf life
• Keep decaf coffee in an airtight container to protect it from air, humidity, and light which can cause it to go stale.
• Store it in a cool, dark place away from the oven, stove, or other sources of heat.
• If you wish to freeze your coffee, separate it into week's portions. This way you only defrost the amount you need, and the rest can remain frozen, keeping it fresher for longer.
• Avoid storing coffee in the fridge as it could absorb odors from other foods.
