Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Shortcake expire?
Shortcake can last up to 1-2 days at room temperature if it's been properly stored in an airtight container. The printed date on the package is usually a 'sell by' or 'best by' date, and not necessarily an expiry date. If unopened and refrigerated, a packaged shortcake can last for 7 days beyond this date. Once opened, it is best consumed within the same day or refrigerated and used within 2 days. If it's a homemade shortcake, it's best to consume it within 2-3 days. Freezing is not typically recommended for shortcake, as it can alter the texture and taste.
How do you tell if Shortcake is bad?
If the shortcake has gone bad, it may develop a stale odor and flavor due to the fats present in the cream and butter getting rancid. You may also notice color changes or mold on the cake. If you see some green, white, or black patches on it, that definitely means it is spoiled. When in doubt, it's best to throw out any food that smells or looks different than usual.
Tips for storing Shortcake to extend shelf life
• Always store the shortcake in a dry and cool place, well-covered, to avoid moisture or exposure to air which can speed up spoilage.
• Using an airtight container is highly recommended, especially as it helps protect the cake from getting crushed.
• If storing in the fridge, make sure to cover the cake with plastic wrap or store it in a sealed container to prevent it from absorbing other flavors from the fridge.
• Cool the shortcake completely before storing; it prevents condensation which can lead to mold.
• Don't wait too long to consume shortcake after it's made, as it's meant to be enjoyed fresh.
