Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Snack Cakes expire?
Marvellously convenient for snacking, snack cakes ironically have a significant shelf life due to their processed nature, usually lasting 1-2 weeks past their printed date when stored at room temperature. But, once opened, their freshness starts to decline, with most snack cakes lasting about one week. Mind that homemade ones won't last as long typically: they're best eaten within 2-3 days, if not refrigerated. Also, freezing is feasible for longer preservation; they can last in the freezer well-packed for up to 3 months. To thaw, just leave them out at room temperature for a few hours or overnight in the fridge.
How do you tell if Snack Cakes is bad?
Indicators of stale snack cakes are usually quite easy to spot. First, check for any signs of mold, such as dark or green spots- if present, the snack cake is definitely a no-go. Besides, taste the cake or its cream filling; if it tastes sour or has an overly sweet, fermented flavor, that's a bad sign. Also, feel the texture- a hard, crusty or overly dry snack cake has probably gone bad.
Tips for storing Snack Cakes to extend shelf life
• Store snack cakes in a cool, dry place, like a pantry or kitchen cabinet, away from direct sunlight.
• Once the package is opened, reseal tightly or transfer any uneaten cakes to an airtight container to keeps fresher for longer.
• For homemade snack cakes lacking preservatives, consider storing in the fridge within a day to prolong their life- just let it temper at room temperature before munching.
• Freezing is a smart backup for continued enjoyment. Wrap individual snack cakes in plastic wrap or aluminum foil then place in a freezer bag, squeezing out as much air as possible before freezing. Defrost by placing in the refrigerator or leaving out at room temperature.
