Expiration & Storage Tips
When does chocolate covered pretzels expire?
Chocolate covered pretzels should usually be eaten within a week for the best flavour and texture but they can usually safely be eaten up to 2 weeks after the package has been opened. Make sure to reseal the package tightly or transfer to an airtight container to maintain freshness. Unopened, they can typically be safe to eat up to a few months past the printed date on the package however the quality may start to deteriorate sooner. They can be frozen to extend their shelf life to about 3 months
How do you tell if chocolate covered pretzels is bad?
When chocolate covered pretzels go bad, you'll notice multiple clues. First, they start to lose their shiny appearance and color, turning dull and sometimes white - a process known as sugar bloom. This is harmless but doesn't taste pleasant. Also, they may develop an off smell or flavor, usually due to the fat in the chocolate turning rancid. Finally, the pretzels themselves may become stale, losing their crunchiness.
Tips for storing chocolate covered pretzels to extend shelf life
• Store them in a cool, dry place. Less moisture and heat means the chocolate will be less likely to melt and the pretzels will stay crisp.
• Keep them in an air-tight container. This prevents moisture and other contaminants from entering, keeping them fresh.
• If freezing, ensure the pretzels are packaged in an airtight, freezer-safe container or bags to prevent freezer burn.
• When defrosting them, leave in the fridge for a couple of hours rather than at room temperature which will prevent the chocolate from melting fast and the pretzels from becoming soggy.
