Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Seafood Bisque expire?
An unopened store-bought or canned seafood bisque typically has a shelf life of about 1 to 2 years from the production date if stored in a cool, dry place. Once opened, it should be refrigerated and consumed within 2 to 3 days. If you make or buy a fresh seafood bisque from the deli section, it should ideally be eaten the same day for the best taste or within 2 days if refrigerated. Seafood bisque can also be frozen for about 4 to 6 months. However, since it contains cream, the bisque's texture might change after thawing.
How do you tell if Seafood Bisque is bad?
Seafood bisque, like any other seafood product, carries a risk of foodborne illness if consumed past its prime. If the bisque develops off-odors, flavors or appearances, it's best to discard it. Signs of spoilage in seafood bisque may include a sour or off smell (not like fresh seafood), discoloration (grayish or darker color), or a slimy texture. Also, if the bisque was left out of the refrigerator for more than 2 hours at room temperature, it's best to discard it as bacteria might have multiplied rapidly.
Tips for storing Seafood Bisque to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate the bisque within two hours of preparation or purchase.
• If you are planning to freeze the bisque, it’s best to leave the cream out and add when reheating, as cream doesn’t freeze well. Freeze in airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags.
• For thawing the bisque, it is recommended to do it in the refrigerator overnight.
• Promptly freeze any uneaten bisque; the quicker you freeze foods, the better they’ll be preserved.
• If you’ve made a large batch, consider freezing individual servings for quick and easy future meals.
