Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Lettuce Wraps expire?
Lettuce wraps, like most foods prepared with fresh vegetables, have a rather short shelf life. If homemade, they should ideally be consumed immediately or stored in the refrigerator for up to two days. Once the wrap has been opened or consumed part way, the quality will begin to degrade so it should be consumed within few hours. Frozen lettuce wraps are not common due to the poor texture lettuce has when it’s thawed. If the lettuce wraps are pre-packaged, adhere to the 'Best By' or 'Expiration' date indicated on the package.
How do you tell if Lettuce Wraps is bad?
Determining whether lettuce wraps have gone bad is pretty straightforward. The first sign to look out for is the texture. If the lettuce has become soggy or slimy, it's definitely past its prime. You might also notice that the lettuce leaves have taken on a yellow or brown discoloration. Lastly, an off smell is a sure sign that your lettuce wraps are no longer good to eat. Trust your senses, if it looks, smells, or tastes off, it’s best to throw it away.
Tips for storing Lettuce Wraps to extend shelf life
• As soon as you make or get your lettuce wraps home, place them in the refrigerator to slow down the decomposition process.
• If possible, keep the lettuce and the filling separate and assemble the wraps when you're ready to eat them. This can preserve the crispness of the lettuce.
• When storing in the refrigerator, place them in an air-tight container or bag to prevent excess moisture from reaching the lettuce which can cause it to spoil quicker.
• Consuming the lettuce wraps within a day or two of making or buying them is your best guarantee of ensuring they stay as fresh and delicious as possible.
