Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Mint Julep expire?
A freshly made Mint Julep should ideally be consumed right away to enjoy its refreshing flavor. Nonetheless, it can be refrigerated for around 48 hours. Pre-mixed Mint Julep sold in stores, unopened, typically lasts for 1-2 years past the date on the packaging, but once opened it should be consumed within a week for optimum taste. If frozen, it can last up to 3 months.
How do you tell if Mint Julep is bad?
If your Mint Julep starts to smell odd, or if the texture or color seems off, especially if there's any mold or cloudiness, it's best to discard it. Taste is also a good indicator - if the drink tastes sour or 'off', it's time to prepare a new one.
Tips for storing Mint Julep to extend shelf life
• Always store Mint Julep in the refrigerator, ideally in a glass container with a tight seal to keep its freshness and prevent the absorption of other food odors.
• If you want to freeze it, pour the mixture into an airtight container, leaving some space for expansion. Don't include the mint leaves in the freeze as they won't hold up well. When you're ready to serve, defrost it in the refrigerator, shake well, and add mint leaves for garnish.
• If you're making a big batch, consider storing the bourbon and syrup mixture separately from the mint, and combining them when ready to serve. This will prevent the mint from turning brown or affecting the overall flavor negatively.
