Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Mud Cake expire?
A store-bought, packaged mud cake typically has a best-before date printed on the packaging. This date is usually a good guide on when to consume it by, and it's normally around 1-2 weeks after purchase. Once opened, it's best to consume the cake within 2-3 days. If you've baked a homemade mud cake, it's a good idea to consume it within 3-4 days. If you decide to freeze your mud cake, it can last up to 2-3 months in the freezer.
How do you tell if Mud Cake is bad?
Mud cake that has gone bad will often have visible signs of mold, usually green or black in color. Additionally, it can dry out and become hard and stale. A bad smell is also a sure sign that the cake has spoiled. Using your senses is often the best way to tell whether a cake is still good to eat - trust your nose and your eyes!
Tips for storing Mud Cake to extend shelf life
• After it has been cut, store your mud cake in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
• If you've baked a homemade cake, let it cool completely before storing it to avoid condensation and mould growth.
• If you're not planning to eat the cake within a few days, consider freezing it. Wrap the cake well in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn.
• When you're ready to eat the cake, let it thaw in the fridge overnight, or at room temperature for a few hours.
