Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Buffalo Jerky expire?
Buffalo Jerky is a type of preserved food, so it can last a good while if stored correctly. In general, unopened packs of buffalo jerky can last up to 1 year from the production date if kept in a cool, dry place. On the other hand, once opened, you should try to finish the jerky in about a week. However, if it's homemade jerky, because it doesn't have preservatives like the store-bought version, it typically only lasts about 1 to 2 months in the fridge. For frozen buffalo jerky, it can stay good for up to 6 months.
How do you tell if Buffalo Jerky is bad?
Even though buffalo jerky can last pretty long, it can still go bad. You may notice a change in its color to a more grayish tint, which is a sign that it's starting to spoil. Also, if the jerky displays any signs of mold growth (white, green, or black spots), it's time to toss it. Unpleasant odor is another strong indicator - tasty jerky should never smell rancid. A slimy or overly sticky surface may also indicate that jerky has spoiled and should no longer be consumed.
Tips for storing Buffalo Jerky to extend shelf life
• Always store your buffalo jerky in a cool, dark and dry place to prevent moisture, which accelerates spoilage.
• Once the pack is opened, seal it tightly after each use. Even better, store it in an airtight container to maintain its freshness.
• If you made homemade jerky, refrigerate it to extend its shelf life. Remember to use airtight containers or vacuum sealed bags.
• Freezing jerky can make it last even longer. To defrost, just leave it in the fridge overnight. Avoid rapid thawing at room temperature as it can foster the growth of spoilage organisms.
