Expiration & Storage Tips
When does macaroon expire?
Store-bought macaroons will generally last about a week after purchase if unopened and kept in a cool, dry place. Once opened, they should be eaten within 2-3 days. Homemade ones have a shorter shelf life, generally not more than a week, even if they haven’t been opened. If frozen, macaroons can extend their life for up to 6 months. However, quality may decrease with time.
How do you tell if macaroon is bad?
Macaroons that have gone bad will typically develop an unpleasant, off smell. The color might become dull and a moldy spot could appear, especially if they were not stored correctly. Stale macaroons might feel hard and lose their chewy texture. Lastly, if you have any doubts, it is safer to throw them out rather than risk eating spoiled food.
Tips for storing macaroon to extend shelf life
• Macaroons are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
• Avoid placing them in direct sunlight or near any heat sources, which could melt them.
• For longer storage, they can be frozen. Place the macaroons in a single layer in a container, separating layers with wax or parchment paper to avoid sticking. Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature before eating.
• Homemade macaroons should be eaten fresh but can be stored the same way if they need to last longer.
