Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Fruit & Veggie Puree expire?
Unopened commercially-produced fruit and veggie puree typically lasts up to 1-2 years if stored properly, due to its airtight packaging and preservatives. However, once opened, it should be consumed within one week if refrigerated. As for homemade puree, without the use of preservatives, it usually lasts around 3-4 days in the fridge. Freezing is a great option - the puree can last for up to 6 months in the freezer.
How do you tell if Fruit & Veggie Puree is bad?
The freshness of fruit and veggie puree can be determined by its color, smell, and texture. If the puree becomes darker or discolored, has a sour or 'off' smell, or has developed a slimy or unusual texture, it's best to discard it. Any visible mold is also a clear sign that the puree has spoiled. When in doubt, toss it out!
Tips for storing Fruit & Veggie Puree to extend shelf life
• Keep the puree in an airtight container to limit exposure to air and bacteria which can speed up the spoilage process.
• It's helpful to store the puree in the back of the fridge where it's typically the coolest.
• If planning to freeze the puree, consider dividing it into small portions using an ice cube tray. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a freezer bag for easy usage and defrosting.
• Don't forget to label the container or freezer bag with the date of preparation to keep track of its freshness.
