Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Taco Kit expire?
Taco kits, unopened and kept in a cool, dry place, usually last between six to nine months past the 'best by' date printed on the package. Once you've opened the kit, the shells, if kept in a sealed bag, can stay fresh for one to two weeks. The seasoning, if unopened, can last between two to three years. Once opened, it's best to use it within six months. The sauce or salsa typically lasts unopened in the pantry for 12-18 months; once opened, it should be refrigerated and used within 1 month. If freezing store-bought sauce or salsa from your taco kit, it can extend its shelf life to about 12 months providing you filled an airtight container leaving a 1/2-inch headspace for expansion.
How do you tell if Taco Kit is bad?
If the taco shells from your kit have become stale, they won't have their typical crunch – they may seem tough or chewy. Plus, you may notice a stale odor. The taco seasoning could develop clumps due to moisture, and if it smells musty or has a changed color, discard it as it might be spoiled. For the sauce or salsa, if it's discolored, has an off smell, and shows signs of molding – dispose of it immediately!
Tips for storing Taco Kit to extend shelf life
• Always store the kit in a cool, dry place until you're ready to use it.
• After opening, keep the shells in a resealable bag to retain their freshness.
• Once the sauce or salsa is opened, always store it in the refrigerator and remember, it’s important to use clean utensils while serving to restrict bacterial growth.
• Consider transferring leftover seasoning to an airtight container and keeping it in a cool, dark place. The spices will lose their potency over time, but they'll be safe to use.
• While it is safe to freeze sauces or salsa, remember that freezing can change their texture and consistency. Thaw it in the refrigerator overnight when you're ready to use it.
