Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Pinwheel expire?
A store-bought, packaged pinwheel typically lasts about 1-2 weeks when unopened and refrigerated, and should be used within 3-5 days of opening. If freezer-stored, they can last up to 2-3 months. However, if they're homemade, we're looking at a shorter lifespan of about 3-4 days in the fridge due to the fresh ingredients used.
How do you tell if Pinwheel is bad?
If your pinwheel has gone bad, there might be several signs. Firstly, it may have an uncharacteristically strong, tangy, or simply off smell that wasn't there when it was fresh. Secondly, there could be visible mould or discoloration on the exterior, particularly on the more moist ingredients. Thirdly, if it's slimy or excessively wet to the touch, that's a pretty clear indicator that it's past its prime.
Tips for storing Pinwheel to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate your pinwheels, even when they're in their original package. This will help them stay fresh longer.
• If you plan to keep them for longer, divide them into portions (1-2 servings each) and freeze them. This way, you avoid frequent defrosting and refreezing which can degrade the quality.
• When defrosting, it's best to let them thaw out in the fridge overnight, rather than using the microwave or leaving them out at room temperature. This helps maintain their texture.
• If they're homemade, be sure to wrap them tightly in cling wrap or store them in an airtight container before refrigerating to preserve freshness.
