Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Scampi expire?
Unopened frozen Scampi is generally good for 6 months to a year past the printed date on the packaging as long as kept frozen. If just refrigerated, ensure to consume the Scampi within 2 days for ultimate freshness. Once cooked, Scampi can last for up to 3-4 days in the fridge.
How do you tell if Scampi is bad?
Bad Scampi will have a strong fishy smell, apart from the mild scent it usually possesses. Discoloration, sliminess, or a change in texture can also be an indicator. If you notice ice crystals or freezer burn on frozen Scampi, it's time to toss it out.
Tips for storing Scampi to extend shelf life
• Always store Scampi in the coldest part of your fridge, preferably at the back end.
• If freezing Scampi, try using 'flash freezing' method. Simply lay them out on a baking tray, let them freeze and then move them to a bag or box. This way, they won’t stick together and you can select as many as you want for later use.
• If buying fresh, transport them home in a cooler and don’t leave them out for more than an hour.
• If the Scampi isn't pre-packaged or vacuum-sealed, transfer it to an airtight container before refrigerating or freezing to prevent it from drying out or absorbing other odors.
