Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Berry Crisp expire?
An unopened, store-bought berry crisp can last up to a week past the sell-by date if stored in a cool, dry place. After opening, it's best to consume it within 3 days, since the crisp can lose its texture and flavor over time. If you freeze the berry crisp, it can extend its shelf life up to 6 months. On the other hand, a homemade berry crisp can last up to 2 days at room temperature, a week in the fridge, or 2-3 months in the freezer.
How do you tell if Berry Crisp is bad?
Check for any visible signs of molds or off-colors, these are definite signs that your berry crisp is no longer safe to eat. If it has a sour or off smell, this is another sign that it's gone bad. A loss of its freshness and flavor, or if the crisp topping appears to be too soggy, can also indicate that it's past its prime.
Tips for storing Berry Crisp to extend shelf life
• Store berry crisp in a cool, dry, dark place if unopened. A pantry or a cabinet away from the stove, oven, and any other heat source is ideal.
• Once opened, keep the berry crisp in an airtight container. Home-made berry crisp can also be kept in the container it was baked in, provided it has an airtight cover.
• If you decide to freeze the berry crisp, remember to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and add an extra layer of aluminum foil or place it in a freezer bag for added protection.
• When defrosting, ideally let the berry crisp thaw out in the fridge rather than at room temperature to keep it fresher for longer. If you need to serve it quickly, you can also speed up the process by thawing it in the oven at a low temperature.
