Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Infant Formula expire?
For unopened infant formula, typically you should adhere to the 'use by' date printed on the can or package. This is usually about a year to 18 months after manufacturing. Once the formula has been opened, powdered formula can be used for a month whereas liquid concentrate and ready-to-use formulas should be used within 48 hours. Freezing is not recommended for any type of infant formula as it can adversely affect the nutritional quality and mixability.
How do you tell if Infant Formula is bad?
You can tell if infant formula has gone bad if it has a rancid or sour smell, if its color has changed, or if it's been stored improperly and past its 'use-by' date. Additionally, for powdered formula, if it feels clumpy or has visible mold it is definitely not good to use. Similarly, for liquid concentrate and ready-to-use formula, if the texture seems abnormally thick, curdled or separated, it's best to throw it away.
Tips for storing Infant Formula to extend shelf life
• Always store unopened cans of formula in a cool, dry place.
• Once open, keep the formula covered in the refrigerator. Be sure to use within the recommended time frame (48 hours for liquid and ready-to-use, one month for powder).
• Avoid keeping open containers of formula at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
• If you've prepared a bottle of formula, use it within 1 hour if at room temperature. Once refrigerated though, use it within 24 hours.
• Do not freeze infant formula as it disrupts the consistency and can decrease its nutritional value.
