Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Baby Cereal expire?
Unopened baby cereal usually lasts for about one to two years past the date printed on the packaging. This long shelf life is due to the dry nature of the product and the fact that it is sealed in an airtight package. However, once opened, the cereal should be consumed within a month for best quality. Storing the opened package in a cool, dark and dry location will help to maintain its freshness. If you decide to freeze baby cereal for later use, it can last for up to three months, but the texture may change slightly after defrosting.
How do you tell if Baby Cereal is bad?
A clear sign that baby cereal has gone bad is if it develops an off smell or taste. Exposure to humidity or moisture can cause the cereal to smell musty or moldy. It might also develop an unpleasant chewy or stale consistency. If you notice any mould growth or if the cereal has been infested by bugs, discard it immediately.
Tips for storing Baby Cereal to extend shelf life
• Always reseal the original packaging tightly after each use to prevent exposure to air
• Store the baby cereal in a cool, dark and dry place such as a pantry, away from heat sources
• For an extra layer of protection, you can transfer the cereal into an airtight container or resealable plastic bag
• Do not use wet spoons or dump leftover cereal back into the package as this can introduce moisture and lead to spoilage
• Consider dividing the cereal into smaller, meal-sized portions before freezing, to make defrosting and serving easier
